Jahmi’us Ramsey to enter the 2020 NBA Draft
There had been talk for a while now that Texas Tech freshman Jahmi’us Ramsey had no interest of returning to college for a second year, but on Saturday the 18-year-old made it official – kind of. While Ramsey did announce that he would be entering the 2020 NBA Draft, he also left the door open for a potential return to Texas Tech.
“Lastly Red Raider Nation – WOW! The incredible moments you have created for all of us with the games in Lubbock were always so special. The love this city gave to all of us will be memories that will always hold a special place in my heart. GUNS UP FOREVER!!!” said Ramsey in a statement released on Twitter.
“I am super excited for the next step in my journey. I am declaring for the NBA Draft and I will be maintaining my college eligibility and reserving the option to return to Texas Tech next year.”
There is no doubt that the program would love to have him back for a second season considering Ramsey averaged an impressive 15 points, 4 rebounds and 2.2 assists a game on his way to being named Big 12 Freshman of the Year – the first player in the school’s history to win the award. He also shot 43% from beyond the arc and earned a place on the All-Big 12 second team.
At just 18 years of age, Ramsey is projected to be one of the youngest players to enter this year’s draft and he is smart to protect his NCAA eligibility. He was the third freshman in Texas Tech history to lead his team in scoring and becomes the third underclassmen in the past three years to declare for the draft.
Ramsey is 6ft 4ins and a tremendous athlete, who has an ability to create something out of nothing. He proved himself to be quite the explosive scorer, putting up double digits in 21 of the 27 games he featured in. He is currently the number 23rd ranked prospect in the ESPN 100, and is the kind of guard any coach would love to have on their roster.
The 2020 NBA Draft is set to take place on June 25th, but that could very well change due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The league suspended play back on March 11th and there are still a plethora of questions remaining as to whether the season can and will be concluded. The league is optimistic that they will be able to play out the remainder of the season and there has even been discussion of players returning to practice facilities as soon as May 1st.
The NBA Draft is unlikely to take place prior to the 2019-2020 NBA season officially being canceled or concluded as it would result in a variety of complications and issues regarding the draft order. Even if the draft can take place virtually like we saw with the NFL Draft, expect it to be pushed back until later in the summer.
